A 30th Anniversary Commemorative Coin
In celebration of 30 years of the Silver Maple Leaf (first produced in 1988), the Royal Canadian Mint has created a special edition double-incuse version of the beloved bullion coin. Both the famed maple leaf design and portrait of Her Majesty, as described below, feature incuse striking. This technique sinks the image into the field for a unique look. As with all Silver Maples, this special edition coin features cutting-edge security features including radial lines, a micro-engraved privy mark, and RCM’s exclusive bullion DNA anti-counterfeiting technology.
Like most of the Royal Canadian Mint’s coins, the obverse of the Silver Maple features a profile view of Queen Elizabeth II. You’ll also find inscriptions of “ELIZABETH II,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “2018.”
The focal point of the reverse is Canada’s signature maple leaf, sculpted with intricate detail by Walter Ott. Next to the leaf’s stem, you’ll notice a small maple leaf-shaped privy mark laser engraved with the coin’s year of issue. The RCM added the privy mark to the annually released coin in 2014 to help prevent counterfeiting. Inscriptions include “CANADA,” “FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR,” and “9999.”
