2017 Frederick Douglass 5 oz Silver ATB

The ATB Frederick Douglass National Historic Site 5 oz Silver Coin is the second 2017 release in the America the Beautiful coin series, which has unveiled 5 new state designs each year since 2010. These silver bullion coins are made with 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and feature a unique design depicting America’s national parks, forests, and memorials. With backing by the US government, all ATB coins qualify for a precious metals IRA.

An obverse is shared by all coins in the ATB series. The portrait of President George Washington, designed by John Flanagan, is highly recognizable because it has been on the obverse of American quarters since 1932 (with digital enhancements made in 2010). You’ll also find inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”

On the reverse, designed by Thomas Hipschen and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, Frederick Douglass sits at a writing desk in front of his home. Douglass is known for escaping slavery and going on to fight for equal rights over his lifetime. His home, known as Cedar Hill, has now become the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site and is open for tours in Washington, DC. Inscriptions include “FREDERICK DOUGLASS,” “DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA,” “2017,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
