Obverse
The Silver Wolf’s obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, The Commonwealth of Nations’ longest reigning monarch. She wears a pearl necklace and earrings. Inscriptions include “ELIZABETH II,” “5 DOLLARS,” “D.G. REGINA,” and “2018.””
Reverse
Designed by Nathalie Lagace, the reverse features an engraved portrait of a powerful wolf leaping toward its prey. This fearless canine hunter relies on instinct and keen senses, along with its pack, as a predator found across Canada. The Wolf is the third design in the RCM’s 4-coin Predator series, following the Cougar and the Lynx.
Minting Techniques and Security Features
RCM engravers used a variety of engraving techniques and finishes to create an image with enough depth to give the wolf a more realistic appearance.
Radial lines on both sides of the coin provide enhanced security. As does the maple leaf-shaped privy mark micro-engraved with the year of issue under the wolf’s front legs on the reverse.
